History Eterna
In 1856 the company was founded by Urs Schild and Dr. Joseph Girard in Grenchen / Switzerland.
Due to numerous inventions and developments the brand ETERNA became famous under the management of Th. Schild and his successors in the following decades.
- 1906 the name „ Eterna-Werke „ was chosen
- 1914 the first wrist watch was launched
- 1930 the smallest ever built wrist watch was produced in series
- In the year 1932 the company split into: "Eterna S.A. Precision Clockworks" and "ETA S.A. Raw
Works"
- 1942 the serial production with automated winding mechanism
- 1948 the usage of a ball-bearing rotor
The five balls of the bearing, with a diametre of 0,65 mm each, became the logo of the company.
The first Gents´ model of an Eterna – Matic dated 1950 was similar structured to the calibre 1248.
In order to improve its exactness the screw unrest will be replaced by a ring of Glucydur.
- 1952 a real Ladies´ automatic.
- 1958 the model > Golden-Heart < for Ladies.
Since 1960 chronometer quality has been achieved.
- 1962 the flattest wrist watch with automated winding mechanism
- 1974 the first Eterna with quarz clockwork
- 1982 Eterna becomes member of the SMH-concern
- and since 1995 Eterna is owned by Ferdinand A. Porsche and his family
Since then Eterna is forced to produce only ETA-raw works with all its models due to economical reasons.
Eterna also stopped to give serial numbers to its clockworks.

The Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl was a practical man. His adventurous journeys brought him fame recognized all over the world.
In 1947 the model "Eterna Matic KONTIKI 10 Nautic" became an unrenouncable element on his research tour.
A tiny edition, which was specially produced for the researcher and which was known to be indestructable, became a producer´s emblem by its name only (the so-called KonTiki by Eterna).
